ADRIEN Nookadu wasn’t born when Johnny Young last said “goodbye Australia” – his signature sign-off for the iconic TV talent show Young Talent Time.

But the 15-year-old Canada Bay performer is the face of a new generation of stars in Channel Ten’s reboot of the Young Talent Time series after surviving a national casting call which drew more than 10,000 applications.

TEN has revealed the first resident cast member for Young Talent Time 2012.

He is fifteen year old Adrien Nookadu from Sydney, who wowed the judges with his vocals and dancing talent. He beat out 30,000 performers who auditioned around the country.

It’s a natural progression that, at the age of 24, the Melbourne-born singer, lyricist, and multi-instrumentalist has harnessed his talents to release his debut EP Love The Fall.

Michael has travelled the globe four times in as many years, and written with the finest in his field, from Guy Chambers [Robbie Williams] and Adam Argyle [Newton Faulkner] in the UK, to Toby Gad [Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas] and David Ryan Harris [John Mayer] in the US.

Michael knuckled down in the US with famed producer Matt Wallace (Faith No More Maroon 5, Bic Runga) at Sound City Studios, where Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Johnny Cash and Tom Petty cut their classic records.

Michael’s hard work paid off when his song Superheroes was chosen as the soundbed for the hit television series Heroes.

After releasing two acclaimed singles, Michael explains, “I set about touring, travelling and assessing what kind of artist I wanted to be. I spent a lot of time recording, writing, learning and listening to a range of musicians from Muddy Waters, Son House, Eva Cassidy, Sam Cooke and Robert Johnson. In the last two years I set about developing every set of skills I could. I played guitar for hours and hours a day, and I performed hundreds of gigs – it’s just been the best time of growth for me.”

Apart from winning coveted support slots for Newton Faulkner, Vanessa Amorosi, and soul legend Seal, Michael’s personal highlight over the last couple of years have saw him performing at the emotional Bushfire Memorial Service with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and a 500 member choir.

Although much has been said about this multi instrumentalist and his ‘big’ voice, it seems to be the songs, his fine band and his honest and entertaining live shows that are ringing the ‘loudest’ bells this time around.

Michael has also embraced social media and the digital world with gusto, engaging with his army of followers on twitter regularly, and often uploading exclusive bonus content to his youtube, twitter, facebook and myspace accounts.

Michael is invigorated by living, breathing and immersing himself in music, and his new EP, released on July 9, features the songs Are You Alive, as heard on Channel Seven’s promo for the final series of Lost, and Love The Fall, which features back up vocals from Michael’s good mates Lisa and Jess Origliasso.

Michael explains, “I met Lisa and Jess when I performed at the ARIA 1’s in 2008. We caught up after the show and that day I made two of the most intensely loyal – albeit miniscule – friends for life. We ran into each other at various awards shows, and soon enough we were hanging out in LA when I was over there to write or record. They are the most genuine and musically gifted girls. We share such a musical affinity and definitely see the world the same way, so it is completely my honour to share my tune with them. They really bought it to life.”

Napoleon once said; “Victory belongs to the most persevering”. Although the Blades boys have never attempted to rule France, MCs Kid Lyrical and Wizardry and DJ Likewyze, along with flexi-member and three times (and current) NSW DMC Champion, DJ Skoob, are taking the James Brown method of musicianship: hard-working and fun as hell!

The band, based in Newcastle, have been setting stages alight the world over with their discerning fusion of hip-hop, dub, crunk and whatever else tickles their fancy; from a much-coveted slot on the Pyramid Rock Festival line-up in 2005, to wowing English crowds (where the lads were the first independent Aussie hip-hop crew to ever play the illustrious Glastonbury Festival in 2008, as well as featuring on Underground United Vol 1, a compilation of hardcore hip-hop alongside Gunshot and Killa Instinct) to firing up the punters in France, Scotland, Germany (where they’ve become cult favourites in the underground scene and featured on the Mass Hysteria Festival line-up), Switzerland and Brazil.

Now that we’ve wet your appetite, what else do you wanna know about the Blades boys? Well, our adept MCs Kid Lyrical and Wizardry are Brazilian Brothers; they’ve had a long history in break dancing and have been writing rhymes and shooting sass since the early nineties and have since adapted their wordplay into Portuguese as well as English. Wizardry even is formerly of local crew Stawm Break Crew, sponsored by Champion, as well as a competitive skater. Phew!

It’s not just music, though. Kid Lyrical is a mad activist, holding a Degree in Bachelor of Science majoring in Biology, has been known to stop eighteen-wheel trucks in Victoria in the name of Save the Rainforest whilst activists ambush the truck and hang onto the cargo to stop the load going to its destination. Lyrical is also not averse to sleeping in trees to keep them from getting cut down. The Blades boys remain to this day totally socially conscious and aware; because, well, as they say, “Might as well use your talent for good, eh?”

Aussie actress Abbie Cornish has been known to drop in and help the Blades boys under the names MC Dusk; and, perhaps most remarkably, Blades have released three discs to their name: Blades of Hades (2002, Independent), This Instalment (2006, Obese) and Shadow Art (2008, Steal City Records)

It is with this impressive team and three sterling albums already behind them that Blades drop new single Where The Fire’s At this July, with an album promised later this year on Difrnt Music/ Universal. What are you waiting for? Get into it!

As Chris explains, ‘So Lonely’ is a song with many musical sub-plots. It’s a thrilling slice of electro pop, with a hypnotic vocal and a hook that will haunt you. Produced by leading Australian Producer/DJ Sam La More (Gwen Stefani, Sneaky Sound System, Empire Of The Sun), and look out for remixes by some of the country’s leading DJ’s, including Hook N Sling.

Chris Sorbello’s musical adventure started when she caught an episode of Young Talent Time when she was just five. Soon after, her dream of joining the Johnny Young Talent School came true. “I just wanted to be a performer,” Chris explains, “even though [at the time] I didn’t know exactly what that entailed.”

Chris remembers singing along to Madonna’s ‘Borderline’ and ‘Cherish’ in her bedroom, while her cousins recount the tale of her singing ‘Locomotion’ for their grandfather. “They say I was singing it off-key,” Chris laughs, “but I think they’re just jealous that I got more pocket money from grand-dad than they did!”

The stage became Chris’s second home, with regular performances at Italian festivals and outdoor events. And then her life changed forever when she was nearly killed in a car accident when she was 16. She spent 10 days in a coma. “I was lucky to survive,” Chris confides. “That experience really shaped who I am. It made me more determined than ever to follow my dream. Life’s too short.”

Chris’s lust for life comes across in her songs. “Pop has a reputation for being disposable, but I really want to say something with my music. Lyrics are really important to me.”

Just check out ‘So Lonely’. Chris sings, “Why does it feel so lonely when I’m your one and only”,but this is no “poor me” song. “I don’t write songs about feeling sorry for myself,” Chris asserts. “My songs are about strength.”

Chris was still a teenager when she relocated to Sydney in 2003. She studied contemporary voice at the Australian Institute of Music before hooking up with David Musumeci and Anthony Egizii from DNA Songs (Ricki-Lee, Amy Pearson, Shannon Noll). “It was love at first sight,” Chris smiles. “I found my sound.”

And that sound is a compelling mash of old and new. Chris manages to sound both retro and right now – think Blondie and Donna Summer meets Ladytron and Lady Gaga.

Though Chris has a knack for creating songs that are ready for both radio and clubs, this is definitely no studio project – Chris is itching to tour. “I’m passionate about performance,” she declares. “I really want to bring a visual element to the stage.” To create her live show, Chris has been collaborating with choreographers Brandon Barton and Ramon Baynes, who have worked with Britney Spears, Beyonce and the Pussycat Dolls.

Chris laughs when she describes herself as a “triple-threat”. “It’s something I heard someone say on a New York TV show. She was talking about how she was a singer, dancer and actor.”
